A fracture is another term used for a broken bone. There are different terms to describe where the bone is broken, in what sort of pattern, open or closed, and if the bone is dislocated or angulated. Fractures can be non displaced, spiral, segmented, or comminuted.Fractures can either be a complete breakage of your bone or it could be a partial one. For some fractures, some require metal plates or surgery while others might only need a brace. The duration of healing from fractures can vary from person to person. Healing depends upon the nature and extent of the injury, the stability of fracture fixation, and biological processes, proper healing process is crucial.

How fracture is treated?

Bone fracture repair is a surgical treatment held to fix the broken bones using some external materials such as metallic screws, pins, rods, or plates to hold the bone in place. This process is also called an open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) surgery.
Why the bone fracture is to be repaired?

In some cases, broken bones heal with casting or splinting alone. However, in most cases especially if the breakage is severe, casting or splinting will not be enough. Therefore, at this stage, the bone fracture needs to be repaired.

In some cases, if the bone is sticking through the skin and fractures is found in joints, wrists, or ankles there are changes of improper healing. In such scenarios, ORIF surgery is conducted.

To avoid future complications, you must always consult the doctor for treatment no matter how severe the fracture is. Complications might be like abnormal healing, loss of function, or weakness of bone, swelling, and many more. And if anyone has a fracture on their long bones such as thigh bone, there is a chance that they might experience a major complication knows as fat embolism. If neglected, it can be fatal.

How long does a fracture take to heal?
Healing of bone fractures usually requires 6-8 weeks. However, it might vary depending upon the area of fracture and person to person. Fractures in hand and wrist often require 4-6 weeks but tibia fracture might take more than 20 weeks too.
