Why post-operative physiotherapy is required?
The cause for your shoulder injury would vary based on different issues and demographics. In younger populations, the shoulder injury could be due to anterior shoulder pain, shoulder instability, or due to recurrent shoulder dislocations which are usually noticed among athletes or sportspersons. However, in elders, the common cause for injury might be due to rotator cuff tears or osteoarthritis.
Depending upon the patient’s capability the exercise would start with simple motions to complex movements. In the beginning few days after the operation, you will have to undergo simple exercise ensuring that the recently operated does not move. After a few days of the surgery, the therapy level moves to the next stage. Passive motion is given to your arms which helps to keep your shoulder flexible during the healing process. Here the arm will be moved by a nurse.
The above process might continue for 5 to 6 weeks until your shoulder is sufficiently healed and can be moved without any risk of causing damage. In the next phase, strength training is included and hence, exercises with free weights and elastic bands are included as a part of strength training.
One should have patience and rest while they undergo physical therapy. Doing the exercise in the right way is also very much important. One can easily get a lot of stuff over the internet but there is no substitute for seeking a professional opinion. Therefore, before you embark on any exercises consult your physiotherapist or a doctor.
