In spite of being a less common cause of low back pain, Sciatic nerve pain is something that I usually need to see an intern. Sciatica refers to pain that spreads along the path of sciatic nerve starting from lower back through hips and buttocks to each leg. It generally affects only one side of the body.

Sciatica usually happens when a herniated disk, bone spur on the spine squeeze any part of the nerve. This leads to inflammation, excessive pain, and sometimes numbness in the leg.

The pain linked with sciatica can be severe often, most of the cases get solved without surgeries. But, when the pain gets more unbearable, it would lead to surgery.

Causes of Sciatica :-

Risk factors of Sciatica consist of:
Age: Age-related changes are the most common causes of Sciatica.
Diabetes: Under this condition, that affects your body by making use of blood sugar which leads to increasing the risk of nerve damage.
Obesity: By increasing the stress on the spine, excess weight helps in spinal changes that trigger sciatica.

Occupation: A job that needs to carry heavy weights for a longer period of time directly lead to the risk of nerve damage.

Complications:
Most people fully recover from sciatica without any treatment or surgery, however, Sciatica can cause permanent nerve damage. You are required to get immediate treatment if you have:
Loss of feeling in the affected leg
Loss of bowel or bladder function
Weakness in the affected leg
Prevention: According to MJ Physio, it’s not possible every time to avoid sciatica, but you can absolutely take preventative measures to reduce the risk of Sciatica. Here are the guidelines you should keep in your mind.
Regular exercises: In order to keep your back strong, you should pay attention to your core muscles. You can ask your doctor to recommend specific exercises.
Maintain your back posture when you sit: Get your hands on the seat that offers good lower backrest, armrest and a swivel base.
Make use of good body mechanics: If you stand for long period of times, rest your one foot on the stool or a small box. Keep your back always straight and bend only at the knees.
